Tough Economic Times For Some Georgia High School Football Teams

by Jeff Fisher
Georgia High School Football Huddle

Over the last several weeks, I've reported on the severe budget problems that are affecting Hawaii's sports programs. Now, on the eve of the opening of the high school football season in Georgia, the Atlanta Journal Constitution has a great story on how the economy is affecting athletes and the teams.

One of the best stories in the story written by Michael Carvell is about a cattle farmer, who donated a cow to the East Jackson football team to defray the cost of team meals. Gives a whole new meaning to a team having a "beefed-up" offensive line!

Super 11 Time

by Jeff Fisher
Georgia High School Football Huddle

During my two years in Atlanta, I always enjoyed the Atlanta Journal Constitution's high school coverage. Aside from Dallas Morning News, it's hard for any other major metropolitan newspaper to top the AJC's high school football coverage. This year I especially like the photography of the AJC's Super 11.

Gainesville Red Elephant fans had to smile when the list came-out as quarterback Blake Sims and wide receiver Tai-ler John both made the team. Sims has verbally committed to Alabama, while Jones has chosen Stanford.

With both back, expect Gainesville to be in the hunt for a Region 7-AAA title. Last year the Red Elephants opened the season with 12 straight wins before losing in the state quarterfinals.

Here's the list:

QB/DB - B.J. Bostic, Jefferson County
QB - Blake Sims, Gainesville
RB - Mack Brown, M.L. King
WR - Da'Rick Rogers, Calhoun
WR - Tai-ler John - Gainesville
WR - Markeith Ambles, Henry County
OL - Kolton Houston, Buford
G/DT - Ed Christian, Lowndes
DE - T.J. Stripling, Southwest DeKalb
DT - Garrison Smith,Douglass
S - Alec Ogletree - Newnan

High School Football Camps Open in Georgia

by Jeff Fisher
Georgia High School Football Huddle

Having lived in Atlanta for two years, I know the passion for high school football runs long and it runs deep! I also know it's hot as...well you know...during two-a-days.

Saturday was the first day that teams could hit the practice fields, and in some parts of the state, the temps hit triple-digits. Plenty of newspapers are already in mid-season form as they get their readers ready for the 2009 season.

Below are links to several stories from around the state.

Texas captured 42% of the vote to easily outdistanced second place Florida, which received 25% of the votes. Finishing in third was Ohio with 13% of the votes cast...followed by Georgia 10%, California finished in a tie for fifth with 7% each.

Thanks to everyone for taking part in the vote. Look for our new Question of the Week on Monday.
