Another #1 Bites The Dust in AAAAA

A topsy turvy season for #1 ranked teams in Georgia biggest class continues. Top-ranked North Cobb's drive for a Class AAAAA championship eneded in the first round of the playoffs Friday with a 35-28 loss to 2006 co-champ Peachtree Ridge.

North Cobb (10-1) almost came back from a three touchdown, fourth quarter deficit, but an interception at the Peachtree Ridge goal line sealed the win for the Lions. The interception of Matt Roark's pass ended a great game for the North Cobb quarterback.

Roark ended the night with 245 yards passing and 174 yards rushing. Roark accounted for all four touchdowns with one on the ground and three through the air.

Top Friday Games in Georgia

Plenty of top games around Georgia tonight as the regular season hits the halfway point.

The biggest will be a showdown in Class AAAAA between the #1 team in the state, Norcross (4-0) and defending co-champ Peachtree Ridge (3-1). The other top AAAAA game will be at Lowndes where the #10 Vikings will take on #2 Coffee. The final big clash in AAAAA will be former #1 Roswell trying to rebound from last week's loss to Walton. Tonight, Roswell plays at Wheeler, the only team to beat the Hornets last year.

In AAAA, #3 Tucker, which hasn't allowed a point in four games, plays Southwest DeKalb in a Region 6 showdown. The big AAA match finds #5 North Hall traveling to #9 Gainesville.

Top-ranked Buford plays #8 Greater Atlanta Christian at home in a AA showdown. The other big AA match-up finds #3 Fitzgerald hosting #5 Dodge County.

Don't forget to check-out The Georgia High School Football Huddle tonight for all of the scores around the state.

#12 Northside (GA) Moves To 5-0 Behind Defense

Northside (Warner Robins, GA), Georgia's defending Class AAAA champion, continues to show why it's not only one of the best teams in the state, but also in the country.

Thursday night the Eagles used another strong defensive effort to roll to a 43-7 win over Dutchtown, which moved the team to a perfect 5-0 start. Through the first half of the season, Northside's D is allowing just 4.0 points a game. Northside is ranked #12 in this week's USA Today Super 25 Rankings.

In the Dutchtown win, the Eagles limited the Dutchtown offense to just 41 yards rushing and 40 passing. For the season, Northside's defense is allowing only 121 yards per game in total offense...not bad for a D that only returned four starters.

Coaching Family Closes In On 400 Wins

Last week Wyoming Valley West's (PA) George Curry won his 400th game as a head coach. Friday night in Georgia, the coaching Maloofs should also find the 400 win circle. All it will take is a win by either Keith Maloof, head coach of Norcross or a win by his brother Kevin, head coach at Dacula.

Keith and Kevin are the sons of George Maloof, who won 167 games as the head guy at St. Pius. Keith enters Friday's game against Peachtree Ridge with 153 wins, while Kevin has 79. If you add the three win totals together, you'll see that the Maloofs have combined for 399 victories.

Tune-in Friday night, to find out if the Maloofs can make history.

Defending Champ Roswell Upset

Walton senior kicker Adam Shreiner should be sleeping well tonight, after booting a 58-yard second quarter field goal that led his team to a 13-10 upset of Roswell, which entered the game ranked #1 in the state in AAAAA. Shreiner's not only took down the defending state co-champs, but also set a Walton school record.
